Our governor has issued a "stay home" order for the entire state. I am only too aware that this will
impact employment for many of you. First, let me assure everyone that none of you are on the brink of
eviction. This is going to be difficult for all of us. But you don't have to worry about losing your home.
On the other hand, please understand that I am being impacted as well. If you can't pay rent, I will lose
a significant portion of my income. That impacts my ability to pay taxes, insurance and your water bill.
We're all in this together. If we work together, we'll all get through this.
Here is my promise to you: I am not going to evict anyone as long as the state is locked down and
for a reasonable period afterward. I say "reasonable" because if you find it necessary to stop paying
rent, I understand that you won't be able to catch up instantly. I will work with you, as I always have,
until we're square again.
What I'm asking from you is that you continue to pay your rent if you can. A rental business does not
exist in a vacuum. I have continuing expenses related to providing you with a home. If I can't pay my
bills, I'm in as much trouble as anyone else. Please think of me as your partner in this, not your
creditor.
At any rate, please keep the channels of communication open. If you can't pay your rent, please let me
know as soon as possible. I'm not going to be angry with you. I understand what's happening.
Finally, if you need surgical masks for going out for groceries, etc., let me know. I sew and I'm going
to be making some masks. They will be made of 100% cotton fabric. The instructions I've seen call
for 1/4-inch elastic to hook them over your ears, but unfortunately 1/4-inch elastic has become very
hard to get. I've got some wider elastic and I'm going to be experimenting to see if it works. If the
wide elastic turns out to be too bulky, I'll be making them with ties made of bias tape.
If you need any, let me know and I'll make you some.
